Course description:

In this session, we'll discuss each of the major social networking tools: blogs, wikis, forums, file sharing, etc., and discuss how and where technology should be applied. This session will lay the foundation for subsequent Strategy sessions that discuss practical implementation examples.

You will leave with a new Wiki account, an impressive LinkedIn account, an understanding of Facebook ads, your own social community on Ning, and the knowledge to harness Twitter effectively.

Creating An Interactive Game with Powerpoint: Millionaire to use with Turning Point (Clickers)

Course description:

This workshop will lead participants through creating a Millionaire-type gaming presentation using a template in Microsoft PowerPoint. Topics to be covered include:

  • Editing MS PowerPoint templates
  • Using animation effects and sound
  • Running a gaming-type presentation
  • Using Turning Point to create the Millionaire Game

Participants should come to this session prepared with 15 questions with 3 incorrect answers and 1 correct answer for each question. Questions should be organized from least to most difficult. Questions and answers can be brought on paper or in an electronic file.

Prerequisite:

Familiarity with using PowerPoint to create simple presentations.

Creating Documents for Use on the Internet

Course description:

This workshop explores use of two formatting options that prepare existing classroom materials for use on the Internet. Learn how to save documents in both Rich Text Format (RTF) and Portable Document Format (PDF) and how to provide the tools necessary for students to use these materials. Editing and converting PowerPoint slideshows to Web Format (HTML) will also be covered. Attendees should bring Microsoft Word and PowerPoint files saved on a flash drive or send the files via email to yourself.

Prerequisite:

Basic computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Course description:

Learn how to create interactive pages using Lesson Builder by Softchalk. The College owns a college-wide site license to the software (Version 5). This session is hands-on. Please bring a PowerPoint slide and a script to record for audio. This applies for both online courses and the traditional face-2-face.

  • Saving MS PowerPoint slides as images;
  • Recording audio using Audacity;
  • Adding slides to Softchalk (Lesson Builder);
  • Upload zipped file.

Bring a PowerPoint presentation to this hands-on workshop and you'll be aided in adding appropriate slides and questions to your presentation so you can leave with your PowerPoint / Student Response System program

Facebook: THE Web 2.0 Social Networking Tool

Course description:

Facebook is a social networking tool used to connect people via the Internet. Facebook can be used to post lessons, create a blog-like “wall,” and post media files. Groups can be created in Facebook that can be integrated into a Blackboard course shell, bringing a class together into a “team,” and thus enhancing affective learning.

Course description:

Palm Beach Community College's iTunes U site went live in Fall 2008. Since then have consistently had more than 100 downloads each week...with absolutely no advertising! Needless to say, students are excited about the option to access learning content in podcast form. Podcasting enhances learning through meeting more learning styles, providing opportunity for repetition as needed and extends the option for mobile learning with an iPod.

Using Microsoft Live Meeting To Support Academic Success

This workshop will cover setting up and using Live Meeting, an Internet based web conferencing utility. The first hour will cover information necessary to operate the software. The second hour will allow for hands-on practice as well as a forum to discuss successful pedagogical strategies when using the Live Meeting communication software.

Course description:

Learn how to use StudyMate® to create 6 Interactive Learning tools with one set of input and see how to make them available to your students using either Blackboard or your Web site. Flash Cards, Glossary, Fill-In the Blank, and Crossword puzzles are just a few of the learning tools you can automatically create. This software is great for creating practice exercises for students' learning of terms, terminology and vocabulary. Added bonus: request this software to be installed on your office workstation and you can also request access to download the software for home use at no charge.

MovieMaker - Digital Video Basics for Windows

Course description:

If you want to use small amounts of video in your classroom, Web site or PowerPoint presentation, this workshop will introduce you to the basics of capturing and using digital video. If you have WindowsXP or later, MovieMaker is included with the operating system and provides a simple, yet powerful tool for making simple movie files. Participants are encouraged to bring their own footage to use in the exercises. A Flip Camera will be available to use to capture footage is needed.

Wiki 101: Wikifying IT's Time to get started with a Wiki

Course description:

  • Would you like to create class community, to enhance students' critical and reflective skills, to encourage informal sharing, to build an ongoing portfolio, or to assemble a dynamic record of a research project and collaboration? Wikis is a tools that may provide a solution for these teaching goals. In this workshop, participants will explore wikis, configure these tools for different purposes, and discuss their instructional uses.

Course description:

There are two SMART technologies available on campus to enhance your teaching capabilities. The SMART Sympodium, which is an interactive electronic lectern, features a screen console and an electromagnetic stylus. The SMARTBoard works like a combination touchpad. Participants will learn how to use the smartobard tools, to record their lecture and to create interactive modules. Best Practices will be indentified.
