America Reads

In an effort to increase the reading proficiency among America's youth, the America Reads Program has been created to have all children reading well and independently by the end of the third grade and to improve math skills for elementary and junior high children. This program utilizes Federal Work-Study students as tutors in the areas of reading and math. Participating in the America Reads is a great opportunity to help kids succeed in the real world, while you gain valuable skills as you earn money for your college education. Contact the Work-Study Coordinator on the campus that you are attending for further information.

The America Reads Program provides an opportunity for students who need financial assistance to earn portion of their college expenses through part-time employment. Students will be placed in the local school districts. If you are interested in a paid Federal Work-Study job as a reading tutor, you must follow these procedures:

1. Apply for Financial Aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

2. On question #31 of the FAFSA, indicate by marking the appropriate box that you are interested in receiving employment as part of the financial assistance.

Once selected by an employer, the student will then start the hiring process with the prospective employer. By state law, to be employed with a school district, the student will be required to have a total criminal background check and fingerprinting. A student may incur out of pocket expenses to cover this process.
