Testing Center Frequently Asked Questions
1.

I don’t know how to use a computer, how can I take the placement test if it’s on-line?
Although the test is administered on the computer, no previous experience with computers is necessary. Test Administrators are there to assist you.

2.

When can I take the College Placement Test (FCELPT)?
First, you should apply for admission to the College by submitting your application and having your high school and any colleges you have attended send official transcripts to the Office of Admissions.

Do I need an appointment to take tests at Palm Beach State College Test Centers?
Some exams require an appointment, some do not. You should check for availability or any changes at each Test Center location.
4.

Should I study for the CPT, ESL Compass and TABE?
You may wish to review basic concepts in reading, grammar, composition, arithmetic, and algebra before taking the placement test. Consult grammar text and books on essay writing available at local bookstores and public libraries to review the basics of sentence skills and essay composition. Refer to any GED, ACT or SAT review book.

When will I get my test scores?

If you are taking the CPT, ESL Compass or TABE, you will receive your test scores upon completion of the exam as well as directive as to the next step in the admission process. Some exams must be hand or machine scored and it might take longer for the results. Other exam scores will be given to you by your Instructor, Organization, etc.

6.

If I want to re-take the CPT, ESL Compass, or TABE, can I do so?
You must wait 30 days to re-take the CPT, ESL Compass or TABE. However, if you register for remediation with the VPI Lab, the Learning Specialist will work with you to increase skill levels to pass the TABE. The Learning Specialist can permit you to re-take the TABE before the 30 days is up if she/he feels you are ready to do so.

7.

If I am a student attending another college, can I take the CPT at Palm Beach State?
Yes, you can. A non-credit application must be submitted to Admissions, and a test fee of $30.00 paid in the Cashiers Office. Test fee receipt and photo ID must be presented in the test center.
8.

If I am currently in a Prep course, can I re-take the CPT now?
No, you cannot take the CPT while enrolled in a Prep course.
9.

What CPT scores do I need to be eligible for college level courses?

REA 0001 - College Prep Reading ........... ( 0 TO 60)

REA 0002 - College Prep Reading II.......... (61 TO 82)

Exempt from REA Prep .........................83 +


ENC 0001 - College Prep English I ............ (0 TO 60)

ENC 0010 - College Prep English II............ (61 TO 82)

Exempt from ENC Prep........................... 83 +

* Students required to prove English proficiency may be placed into the Language Institute or EAP Foundation Programs.

Note: Students are degree seeking and whose primary language is not English, and test into preparatory reading and/or English are required to take EAP preparatory courses.

Is there a study source for the Hobet Test?

Yes, you can purchase a book to study for the Hobet test by contacting a Palm Beach State bookstore to request they order one for you.

What is CLEP?
The CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) is backed by the College Board and is the most respected, widely accepted credit-by-examination program of its kind - and has been for over 30 years! The CLEP is comprised of individual exams in subject areas requiring a 90 minute examination. More CLEP Information.

Does Palm Beach State College accept CLEP examination scores for college credit?

Yes, CLEP examination scores are accepted at Palm Beach State. Check with The Office of Admissions or Advisement for more information
13.

Can I take the CLEP at Palm Beach State College?
Yes you can take the CLEP at a Palm Beach State Test Center location. Check test schedule on campus web page.
14.

Can I be waived from taking the College Placement Test?

Students may be waived from taking all or part of the placement tests under the following circumstances:
  • Students with a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT 1) verbal score of 440 or better will be waived from the English and Reading part of the test.

  • Students with a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT 1) Math score of 440 or better will be waived from the Math portion of the test.

  • Students with a ACT-E assessment score of 17 and higher in English and 18 and higher in Reading will be waived from the English and Reading sections of the test. -Students with a ACT-E assessment score of 19 or better will be waived from the Math portion of the test.

  • Transfer students who have completed appropriate college-level course work may be waived from taking all or part of the placement tests.

15.

Can I be waived from taking the TABE?

Students may be waived from taking the TABE under the following circumstances:
  • If you are a student with an AAS Degree or higher. Confirm admission requirements for specific programs. Some limited access programs do not allow exemptions.
  • A student who has successfully met college level academic skills exemption through test scores on the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST). Update: effective July 1, 2009 the CLAST has been repealed. As a result, confirm Clast exemption status with the Palm Beach State program of choice.
  • A student who has already met the minimum cut scores, within the past two years, on the FCELPT (CPT), SAT1 or ACT-E.
