What is an Internship?

An internship is any carefully monitored work or service experience in which an individual has defined learning goals; in addition, the observations of the program sponsor and the required written assignments actively reflects what the intern is learning throughout his/her experience.

Goals

An intern should experience the following:

1. An exposure to a professional career in radio, motion picture, video or television.
2. The ability to apply principles learned in and outside of the classroom.
3. The accomplishment of meaningful assignments during his/her internship.
4. The development of marketable skills.
5. An understanding of his/her abilities and weaknesses.

FAQs  - Frequently Asked Questions about the Motion Picture and Television Internship Program:


1.When should a student enroll in the Internship Program?

A Student should enroll when he/she has completed all of the technical requirements of the program, including Motion Picture I and Motion Picture II; Lighting and Cinematography; Editing; TV Studio Production; and Directing. In addition, a student should have completed several general education course requirements including College Composition I and Mathematics.

2. How do I obtain an internship?

Students are encouraged to use any ongoing job related activity as their internship; however, students can seek their own internships through the Career Placement Center or through the Motion Picture and Television Department Office.

3. What are the requirements for completing an internship?

An intern must complete a minimum of 120 intern hours within 12 weeks for the three credit course and must provide documentation via timesheets. In addition, an intern must complete several written assignments; must be observed at the intern sponsor site by the department chair; and must have the intern sponsor provide an evaluation of the intern’s performance.


4. How are my grades calculated for the internship?

The grades are calculated using a point system for all assignments. Written assignments are completed in Microsoft Word, double-spaced using 12-point font. Students are expected to have strong writing skills and a satisfactory knowledge of grammar and sentence construction.

5. Are the internships paid?

No, most internship assignments are unpaid. Remember, while the internships may begin as unpaid positions, several of our graduates are now working successfully in the industry!
