Faculty Services at the Lake Worth Library —

Welcome to Palm Beach Community College Library Learning Resource Center (LLRC). This information will help you become familiar with our LLRC, and how we serve the Faculty.

Location
The Library Learning Resource Center (LLRC), located in the Harold C. Manor Library on the west side of the Lake Worth campus, consists of three floors: 1st floor – Media Technology & Instructional Services, Word Processing and PTLC; 2nd floor - periodicals and School Board Professional Library; 3rd floor – books, Circulation Desk, Internet Lab.

Hours
Library hours vary during holidays, special events, summer terms, and between terms. Changes will be announced and/or posted. The usual hours are:
Monday–Thursday 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Friday 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

You can also ask for help by using the Ask a Librarian service on our website. Chat live, one-on-one in an interactive online environment on campus or in your home. “Ask a Librarian” is a collaborative project between College Center for Library Automation (CCLA) and the Tampa Bay Library Consortium (TBLC), and a component of the Florida Electronic Library. This free online reference service offers assistance from library professionals from participating academic, public, and special libraries throughout Florida.

Help Build Our Collection The process of selecting materials for the library is a cooperative one involving you and the librarians. We strive to have a collection that not only supports the curriculum of the college, but also your needs. We encourage you to make recommendations, which support the courses you teach and which supplement the general library collection appropriate to your respective discipline. Give your requests to Ken Myers (868-3618) or to any of the other librarians. You may also submit it via the form on our homepage.

Can’t find what you need?
Borrow materials from other libraries through our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. You can request periodical articles or books via the web through
FirstSearch, the library homepage ILL Link or by completing an ILL form when you are in the library. Request a SEFLIN library card (3rd floor) for on-site privileges at 20 or more participating academic libraries in Southeast Florida. You must agree to abide by the rules established by the lending library. Rules may include the number of and types of items that may be checked-out, the length of loans, charges for overdue items, and renewal policies. Books from these libraries are usually returned via the SEFLIN courier.

Library Cards
Your PantherCard (All-in-One Card) is also your library card. You assume full responsibility for all materials checked out on your card. A lost card should be reported immediately to prevent charges for materials that you did not take out. You need a library barcode to access our online databases. For questions about the library card, call the Circulation Department (868-3710.)

PantherCard
The PantherCard is your photo ID. Get your card at the Bookstore. You will need the PantherCard to print from the computers, make copies on the copier, and check items out of the library. Add value to your card in an amount of $1 or more at the Card Management System on the third floor.

Copy Machines
A public copy machine is located on each floor. Copies cost $.10 per page. A copier is also available in the PTLC for making copies for your classes, but you will need a code from your Department. The Word Processing Center can also give you assistance. The college is in total compliance with the Federal copyright laws and is not liable for any violations by library users.

Returning Library Materials
Return books that you have checked out to one of the book drops or to the Circulation Desk on the 3rd floor. There is a blue book drop located at the south end of the Circulation Desk, another one located on the West side of the Library near the Allied Health Building, and another one located on the South side of the LLRC building on the ground level near the stairs.

Periodicals (2nd floor)
The library subscribes to over 2200 titles of magazines, journals and newspapers in both microform and paper formats. You also have access to over
70 online databases in the library, or your office, or at home via the library homepage. You do need a library card to access the databases.

School Board Professional Library (2nd floor) The Professional Library of the Palm Beach School District has 12 online databases, ERIC documents (1970 to current), professional books and journals that you may use. They also provide individualized research on education topics. Call (561)641-2305 for further information.

Books
(3rd floor) We have approximately 150,000 volumes in the collection. Regular circulating books may be checked out for 21 days. Special collections include the Civil War Collection, the Erling Mystery, and leisure reading paperback collection. (A Finnish Collection is located on the second floor).

Reference

(2rd floor) Atlases, almanacs, biographical information, directories, dictionaries, encyclopedias and much more – you’ll find it in the Reference collection. Reference books do not circulate, but must be used in the library. A librarian is available to assist you in using the Reference collection, in locating information on different subjects, and in using the online catalog, and various electronic databases. If you need some research done, contact the Reference Desk (868-3713), or access
Ask a Librarian via the Library web page.

Reserve Room
(3rd floor) Do you have a book or an article that you want your entire class to read? What about having a textbook available for your class? Consider using the Reserve Room. The Reserve Room is a temporary collection of materials placed in the library by faculty to provide limited loan periods and maximum access. Students use the items in the library only. The materials are usually placed in Reserves for the term a course is taught and are returned to you after the term. The college is required to be in total compliance with the Federal copyright law, so the number of photocopies should not exceed the copy limits as specified by current copyright laws, and you must obtain permission to copy if it does not fall within the copyright guidelines.

FAX Service
( 3rd floor) You can send and receive faxes on the third floor (Reference area) for a fee: Sending a Fax (maximum of 10 pages) First page: $1.00 (Additional pages 50¢ per page, cover sheet no charge) Sending a fax via 800 number: 1-3 pages no charge, 4-10 pages (50¢ per page) Receiving a Fax (maximum 10 pages): 10¢ per page.

Library Instruction/Tours
To introduce your students to resources of the LLRC, you can schedule special sessions that will review the sources that are available in the library. Both computer and print sources will be covered. In addition to formal instructions, you can also schedule a walking tour of the LLRC. Contact Estaline Rogers (868-3705) or submit your request online to schedule a class. All the librarians are available to show you what is available in the library and how to use the various electronic resources. Make an appointment with the librarian. You can either meet in the library or in your office.

From Dewey to Library of Congress
We are in the process of reclassifying the collection. Materials will be changed from the Dewey Decimal Classification System to the Library of Congress Classification System. Both numbers are listed in the catalog, so take note of both numbers when searching for a book. Books from both classifications are interfiled in our collection. If you have problems locating a book, please ask for assistance.

You can renew a book or check your library account via our homepage. The service is available from the LLRC catalog (LINCCweb) by clicking

LINCCWeb - Our Catalog
LINCCWeb is not only the catalog for PBCC, but also for all 28 Florida community colleges. Included with the catalog are databases and e-journals. Search the catalog along with the databases. Many of the databases include full-text articles. When accessing LINCCWeb off campus, you will need your library barcode.

Library Homepage Visit our website http://www.pbcc.edu/LLRC/ for:

  • PBCC Library Catalog and other library catalogs
  • Databases for periodicals and newspaper articles (including full-text articles)
  • Websites by subject (useful and valid websites chosen by the library staff)
  • Tips and Guides (helpful information on style guides, evaluating websites, etc.)
MyLibraryService.org By using MyLibraryService.org, you can simultaneously search the combined holdings of 25 SEFLIN member libraries and other selected Web resources. Find the library that has what you need and either request the item through our Interlibrary Loan Department or visit the library.(Links to online maps to the libraries are also included.) You have library privileges at a number of the SEFLIN academic libraries. Ask for the SEFLIN library card at the Circulation Desk. MyLibraryService is also available in Spanish at MiServiciodeBiblioteca.org.
