Criminal Justice Technology / Law Enforcement Officer Track (A608 - 2606)

At a Glance
This degree program is a limited access program for the Criminal Justice Academy student (Corrections and Law Enforcement certificate program students) and/or the correction and law enforcement officer who wishes to advance in his or her career.
Employment Opportunities Upon completion of this program, you may seek employment as a Law Enforcement Officer. It is necessary to complete the Police Academy to be hired as a Law Enforcement Officer in Florida.

Nationally, in 2006, seventy-nine percent were employed by local governments. State police agencies employed about 11 percent, and various Federal agencies employed about 7 percent. A small proportion worked for educational services, rail transportation, and contract investigation and security services.

Job Outlook Employment of police and detectives is expected to grow 11 percent over the 2006-16 decade, about as fast as the average for all occupations. A more security-conscious society and population growth will contribute to the increasing demand for police services.

Salary Information The mean hourly wage for police and sheriff's patrol officers in Palm Beach County in 2008 was $27.28. The mean annual wage or salary was $56,741.26. In Florida in 2008 as a whole, the mean hourly wage for police and sheriff's patrol officer was $24.35. The mean annual wage or salary was $50,636.15.

Special Skills or Qualifications Needed Must be observant and resourceful. Able to remain calm under stress. Must be in good physical condition (a fitness test is required). Should be sensitive to cultural diversity and identify with the community. Must have strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
