Emergency Medical Technician (B217)

This applied technology diploma program is designed to prepare the student for the Florida State Board Examination for Emergency Medical Technician - Basic. EMT-B's serve as a link in the chain of the health care team. It is recognized that the majority of pre-hospital emergency medical care will be provided by the EMT-Bs. This includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other emergency services agency.
Employment Opportunities Employment is most frequently with local government for fire departments, public ambulance services and public service departments. Four out of ten work for private ambulance services while other work within medical facilities.

Special Skills or Qualifications Needed Calmness and good judgment under stress. Ability to solve problems, act quickly and direct others. Manual dexterity, physical coordination and strength to lift, extricate and move patients. Ability to work as a team members. This occupation also requires good interpersonal and communication skills, compassion and a desire to help others.
Career Path Notes This program is a prerequisite to the paramedic program. Students who want to move up in the field should start out in EMT-Basic.
