This degree program is designed to provide students with the technical expertise in management of health information contained both in a paper and an electronic formats. The student will obtain knowledge and skills to perform job function in medical records, medical coding, medical billing and other information-based areas in both the hospital and outpatient settings. Graduates of the program will be able to provide reliable and valid information that drives the health care industry. |
Employment Opportunities |
Employment opportunities are found in healthcare facilities, government agencies, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, consulting firms, to name a few. The roles commonly filled by a registered health information technician (RHIT) include: cancer (or other disease) registrar, clinical coder/compliance auditor/vocabulary specialist, clinical data collection and reporting specialist, data integrity specialist, document imaging coordinator, information access/disclosure specialist, quality improvement specialist, reimbursement specialist/financial services liaison, and instructor/trainer.

Job Outlook |
Employment is expected to grow faster than average expecting an increase by 18 percent through 2016 because of rapid growth in the number of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that will be increasingly scrutinized by health insurance companies, regulators, courts, and consumers.

According to a survey conducted by AHIMA in 2006, the average annual full-time HIM salary across all work settings if $55,676. Important to note is that salary levels are driven by job title, educational level, and geographical area.

The ability to analyze contents of medical records, knowledgeable about medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, strong communications skills, ability to interact well with patients, physicians, and others; accuracy, attention to detail, work under pressure, multitask, manual dexterity, a respect for the privacy of patients. |

Upon graduation, the student is awarded an associate in science degree and may be eligible to take the registered health information technician (RHIT) and/or the certified coding associate (CCA) certification examinations. |
