Career Profile - What You Need to Know About...

Crime Scene Technology (2435)

At a Glance
This degree program will prepare the student to operate behind the yellow crime scene tape. Crime Scene Technologists locate, collect, and identify physical evidence used to solve crimes. The student will learn how to properly collect and preserve physical evidence, how to photograph crime scenes, and how to reconstruct crime scenes & vehicle accidents.
Employment Opportunities Upon completion of the program, you may seek employment as a Crime Scene Investigator or Evidence Technician for law enforcement agencies, medical examiner's office, legal firms, the insurance industry or private forensic labs. Forensic Science Technicians (Crime Scene) investigate crimes by collecting and analyzing physical evidence. Often, they specialize in areas such as DNA analysis or firearm examination, performing tests on weapons or on substances such as fiber, glass, hair, tissue, and body fluids to determine their significance to the investigation.

Salary Information The average annual wage is $61,152 for Criminal Investigators. The entry annual wage is $41,642 and the experienced annual wage is $70,928.

Special Skills or Qualifications Needed Students should exhibit tenacity and the ability to demonstrate analytical thinking ability. They should also have a scientific aptitude. Crime scene investigators are thinkers, good with details, good with putting pieces of a puzzle together, and curious. Good communication skills are also very important.
