2/17/2010

The Panther men lost to Indian River this evening at Elisabeth Erling gym 72-53. The Panthers were down 9 at the half and never made a run as Indian River stretched the lead to 22 midway through the second half. Paul Hagler led the Panthers with 15 points. With the win Indian River clinched the Southern Conference championship.

2/13/2010

In their next to last week of the season the Panther men split, defeating Brevard 80-66 at Elisabeth Erling gym on Wednesday Feb 10 and losing on the road to second place Broward 83-78 on Saturday Feb 13. The Panthers are currently 9-15 overall and 3-7 in the Southern Conference. They complete their season with a home game this Wednesday Feb 17 against conference leader Indian River and on the road Saturday in the season finale against Miami Dade.

After a 2 week layoff the Panther men's basketball team fell twice last week losing to Miami Dade 77-71 at home on Wednesday Feb 3 and 70-60 against Indian River on the road Saturday Feb 6. The losses drop the Panthers to 8-14 overall and 2-6 in the Southern Conference.

The Panther men rebounded from their difficult loss to conference leading Indian River with a 68-61 victory on Wednesday evening against Brevard. The Panthers overcame a 10 point deficit in the first half going on a 6-0 run at the end of the half and continued that with a 31-14 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take control of the game. Palm Beach State moved their record to 8-12 overall and 2-4 in the Southern Conference. They now have 2 weeks off before facing arch rival Miami Dade on Feb. 3 in Elisabeth Erling gym.

The Palm Beach State College men suffered a difficult defeat at the hands of the Southern Conference leader, Indian River, Wednesday evening losing 67-63 in Elisabeth Erling gym. The game was a battle from beginning to end with no team leading by more than 8. Spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd the Panthers tied the game with 45 seconds to go and had the ball but turned it over. Indian River converted a three point play on the ensuing possession from which the Panthers could never recover. Sophomore Andrew Ferry collected 21 points and point guard Antonio Johnson had 20. The loss drops PBSC to 1-4 in the conference and 7-12 overall.

After breaking a 5 game losing streak against Pasco Hernando on Dec 5, the men are currently mired in a 4 game losing streak suffering 2 close conference losses and dropping 2 games to nationally ranked programs in the Florida shootout. In their latest losses PBCC was defeated by Chipola (72-88), Central Florida (83-95) and Brevard in a heartbreaker 70-71.

The Panthers rebounded from their 5 game losing streak with a nice road victory over Pasco Hernando Saturday afternoon 79-73. PBCC was led by sophomores Andrew Ferry (24 pts.) and Paul Hagler ( 18 pts. ). PBCC now stands at 5-6 on the season as they enter Southern Conference play on Wednesday night December 9 against Broward.

PBCC was badly outrebounded (58-26 ) on Wednesday night at Polk College and went down to their fifth defeat in a row 81-56.

The Panthers woes continued as they dropped their third and fourth straight games over Thanksgiving week. Wednesday Nov 25 PBCC lost to Florida State College @ Jacksonville 81-56 and on Saturday in Elisabeth Erling gym the Panthers lost a hard fought battle 66-61 to State College of Florida @ Manatee. Injuries to starter Antonio Johnson, sixth man Darrien Freeman and the defection of back up point guard Uriah Walker has influenced this 4 game losing streak.

11/21/2009

The Panthers returned to Elisabeth Erling Gymnasium on Saturday but the home court did not bode well for Coach Groothius's young team. PBCC fell 78-70 to Pasco Hernando dropping their season record to 4-3. The Panthers first half knotted them a 39-39 tie but it was evident that if they didn't correct their defensive recovery and rebounding issues it was going to be a long night. After intermission Pasco Hernando immediately went on a 12-4 run to open up an 8 point lead and PBCC could never get the margin below 3.

The Panthers lost on the road Wednesday night to State College of Florida-Manattee 86-75. PBCC took a 1 point lead into the locker room at halftime and were only down 4 with 3:30 to go in the game but lack of rebounding and not being able to make shots in the final minutes of the game doomed the Panthers. With the loss PBCC drops to 4-2 on the season.

On Saturday November 14, the young PBCC men's basketball team continued their defensive improvement and won for the 4th time in 5 games this season as they defeated Florida State College @ Jacksonville 73-64. It is the second game in a row the Panthers have held their opponent in the 60's. PBCC improved its' season record to 4-1 going into their game Wednesday evening on the road against State College of Florida ( Manatee).

11/12/2009

On a veterans day of basketball the PBCC men's team put on their hard hats and earned a hard fought victory in Elisabeth Erling gymnasium over Daytona State 72-67. The game was never more than a 10 point lead for the Panthers as they led most of the way but received a scare late in the game as Daytona State had the ball down by 1. But sophomore Paul Hagler got a critical steal and score to provide the breathing room the Panthers needed. The Panthers are now 3-1 on the young season.

The Men opened their season last week with a 2-1 start as they defeated Daytona State 85-82 on the road Wednesday Nov 4. The Panthers returned to Elisabeth Erling gym for their annual "Battle by the Beach" tournament and defeated Lackawanna (PA) Friday evening 101-87 in an action packed game before losing Saturday night to the pre-season #20 ranked team in the country Monroe College (NY) 98-63.
