DELPH WINS SANDY MILLER "SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR" IN STATE OF FLORIDA-RELEASED 3/15/2010

Krystal Delph, Palm Beach State College's Panther basketball star has received the prestigious Sandy Miller award as the top community college scholar athlete in Florida. Delph was a 2 year starter for coach Kris Ruffo's Panthers that advanced to the "Final Four" of the State Tournament. Delph has maintained a 3.58 grade point average and plans on pursuing a career in physical therapy. Krystal averaged 10.4 points per game, 7.7 rebounds per game, shot 50% from three point land and 83% from the line for the 21-7 Panthers.

The Palm Beach "Boys of Summer" were treated to Major League Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner as he spoke to them before practice on Wednesday February 24, 2010. Kiner has been a radio broadcaster for the New York Mets since 1962. He is one of only 3 players to be inducted into the "Hall" having 10 years of experience or less at the major league level. His first 9 years in the league Kiner hit more home runs than any major league player until his record was recently broken by St Louis Cardinal Albert Pujols. Kiner led the majors in home runs for 6 straight seasons.

THE PANTHER WOMEN WENT AROUND AND COLLECTED DONATIONS AND THEN PROCEEDED TO GO SHOPPING. THEY WRAPPED PRESENTS AND INVITED THE BURGESS FAMILY TO SPEND THEIR CHRISTMAS "PALM BEACH STATE COLLEGE PANTHER STYLE", IN THE GYM.

SOFTBALL PLAYERS RECEIVE ACADEMIC ACCOLADES
RELEASED SEPT 16, 2009

THREE PANTHER SOFTBALL PLAYERS RECEIVE ACADEMIC ACCOLADES: UNDER THE DIRECTION OF HEAD SOFTBALL COACH MARTHA MCCALL, SOFTBALL PLAYERS CHESSIE BOGGESS, KAYLA DORSEY AND BRITTANY JONES WERE NAMED SCHOLAR ATHLETES FOR 2009 BY THE NFCA (NATIONAL FASTPITCH COACHES ASSOCIATION). IN ORDER TO BE NAMED, A STUDENT ATHLETE MUST MAINTAIN A 3.5 GPA FOR THE FALL AND SPRING SEMESTERS.

BOGGESS, WHO WAS ALSO NAMED ACADEMIC ALL- AMERICAN BY THE NJCAA GRADUATED THIS PAST SPRING AND IS ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA. DORSEY, WHO ALSO GRADUATED THIS PAST SPRING IS ATTENDING BREVARD COLLEGE IN NORTH CAROLINA AND JONES IS THE TOP RETURNER ON THIS YEARS TEAM AND WAS NAMED 1ST TEAM ALL SOUTHERN CONFERENCE THIS PAST SPRING.

Volleyball Match Schedule Set for 2009

Coming off a third place finish in the FCCAA Region 8 State Tournament last season, the PBCC volleyball team is hoping to make a return trip this year. The Panthers are members of the tough Florida southern Conference and will have to finish first or second in the conference standings to advance to the "elite 8" of the state torunament. Maurice "Tony" Sheals Resigns, Alex Groothius Steps In
Released August 3, 2009

After completion of his third year as the PBCC Men's Basketball coach, Tony Sheals stepped down on July 22 to take a similar high school position in Tallahasee. Sheals cited the urge to get back with his family who lives in the Tallahasee area and reunite with them.

PBCC is pleased to announce that Sheals assistant, Alex Groothius has agreed to step in on a part time basis for this coming season as the head coach. Groothius has had 10 years of assistant work in the basketball arena working with the likes of Herb Brown (NBA Charlotte Bobcats), Derrick Whittenburg @ Hampton and Fordham Universities and Bruce Pearl (Tenn.) coaching team USA.

PBCC Athletic Director David Holstein states, It is with pleasure that we announce Alex as our men's basketball coach for the coming season. He has played a major part in the recruitment of the current crop of players and it is because of his diligence that all of them at this time are committed to coming to PBCC. Coach Groothius is the right fit for this group of young men."

Groothius has a bachelor's degree in speech communications from Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York and has currently completed 32 hours toward his Master's degree in physical education.

 

12 PBCC Student Athletes Named to FCCAA All Academic Team

The following ahtletes were named to the Florida Community College Activities Association All Academic Team. To qualify students needed to maintain a cumulative gpa of 3.25 or above.

Baseball: Daniel Scheffler, Raymond Church, Evan Stermer, Ben Carhart, Ronnie Oelerich

Women's Basketball: Krystal Delph

Softball: Chessie Boggess, Kayla Dorsey, Brittany Jones

Volleyball: Brigett Brandjes, Natalie Harville, Lindsay Mullen

 

Boggess Named Academic All American- released July 23, 2009

Chessie Boggess, PBCC's outstanding softball player was named to the NJCAA Academic All American Team. To qualify student athletes have had to complete 3 or more full time semesters maintaining a 3.60 gpa or above. Chessie's gpa was an outstanding 3.75.

 

MOONEY NAMED RAWLINGS NJCAA NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Following in the footsteps of his brother Michael, 2 years ago, Peter Mooney collected the National Rawlings Defensive Player of the Year Award at the shortstop position for Division I Junior College baseball programs. Mooney's fielding % was .961 for a Panther team that won 18 of their last 22 and finished 3rd in the State of Florida's recently concluded tournament.

Sophomores Larry Walicki and Raymond Church along with freshman Peter Mooney were selected to the recently concluded All tournament team at the State Finals.

PANTHERS FINISH 3RD IN FCCAA BASEBALL STATE FINALS

In 5 days of action packed baseball the PBCC team came up a little short in their quest for the schools first state title in years. PBCC fought their way through the consolation bracket working their way into the final 3 before being ousted by Chipola on Tuesday May 12. PBCC started off the tournament on Friday May 8 on the arm of Mike Rayl and cruised to a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the 9th vs. Tallahassee only to allow the northern school to score 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th, losing 7-6 on the first day.

On Saturday May 9 the Panthers bats and pitching were alive and well as they crushed St. Pete 12-1 to set up a game with conference rival Miami Dade who was ranked 5th in the country. Sunday May 10 was arguably the game of the tournament as the lead changed hands 5 times before Peter Mooney stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and hit a walk off homer to give the Panthers another day winning 11-10.

On Monday May 11 the Panthers continued their quest as they defeated Sante Fe (eventual state champs) 10-6 by scoring 4 runs in the ninth innning however on Tuesday May 12 the dream ended as Chipola defeated PBCC narrowly 4-3.

The Panthers ended their magical run by winning 18 of thier last 22 games. Their final season record was 34-20 which marked the 3rd time in the 4 years of Coach Alex Morales' tenure that the Panthers have won 30 or more games.

 

DJ LEONARD SENDS PANTHERS TO ELITE 8 WITH 12TH INNING WALK OFF HOMER!

In a game packed with drama, tension, great defense, and clutch hitting, the PBCC baseball team punched their ticket to the State Juco Finals with a thrilling 8-7 12 inning victory over Broward on Wednesday evening. Three times in the late and extra innings the Panthers fought back from deficits culminating in Leonard's dramatic 3 run homer in the bottom of the 12th to set off the mad celebration.

With the victory, PBCC has now gone 15-2 in their last 17 games and moved their record to 31-18 overall. The Panthers will take on Tallahassee at 1pm on Friday May 8 at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Florida.

 

PBCC BASEBALL CONTINUES LATE SEASON TEAR!

After playing the first two thirds of the season with .500 ball (16-16), Coach Alex Morales' Panthers have turned the corner winning 14 of their last 16 games to run their season record to 30-18. The Panthers have won the first 2 rounds of the playoffs against Brevard 6-4 and Broward 8-4. PBCC is 1 step away from qualifying for the "Elite Eight" of the Florida State JUCO Tournament. PBCC will take on Broward again today April 29 @ 4pm for a right to advance to the State Finals.

 

PBCC Baseball Team Places 8 on First or Second Team Team All-Conference

The Panthers baseball team placed 4 players on the first team and 4 players on the second team of the Southern conference as voted on by the coaches. Named to the first team were Peter Mooney- infield, Larry Walicki - outfield, Patrick Roedel - catcher, Michael Rayl - pitcher. Second team selections were Dan Scheffler- infield, Raymond Church - infield, Alex Bello - outfield and Ronnie Oelerich - pitcher. PBCC has won 12 of their last 14 games and begin the playoffs today, Monday April 27 vs. Brevard.

 

Panther's Mooney Named Baseball Player of the Week

Peter Mooney a first year shortstop for Palm Beach Community College was named the Florida Community College JUCO Player of the week for the period April 6-13. Mooney batted .556 (10-18) with nine runs scored, one home run and eight RBI's in four games (3-1) for the Panthers. In a two game series against Brevard on April 7-8, Mooney went 7-8, scored 5 times and drove in five runs. He followed that with a 3-6 effort against #4 ranked Broward on April 10 in which he had a home run and three RBI's. Mooney also walked three times last week and was a perfect 3 for 3 in stolen bases.

 

Downs Named Division I Men's Basketball National Juco Player of the Week

Tim Downs was named Divison I Juco Player of the week for the period February 15-20, 2009. Downs a 5'9" point guard from Greenville, SC, eclipsed the 1,000 point barrier for his career at Palm Beach. Downs scored 40 points and had 7 assists in a 105-76 win over Brevard and then came back with 21 points and 5 assists against the #3 ranked team in the country (Miami Dade) in a tough 88-82 defeat. In his 2 seasons with the Panthers, Downs has led his team in scoring, steals and assists. He is a first team All-Region 8 player.

Three Women PBCC Basketball Players Selected All Southern Conference

The late season and conference play of Jamarra Robinson, Viviana Penate and Krystal Delph garnered them all conference honors as voted on by the coaches this past week. Robinson, the Lady Panthers sophomore point guard collected first team honors and was 1 vote shy of making the All State team. Penate and Delph each were voted to the second team. The Lady Panthers finished 10-14 winning 5 of their last 6 games.

Tim Downs named to All State Men's Basketball Team

Palm Beach's flamboyant sophomore guard, Tim Downs was named to the 12 man All State team as voted on by the coaches. Downs who led the Panthers in scoring, steals, assists, and 3 pt field goals scored over 1,000 points in his 2 year career. He had high games of 40 points vs. Brevard and 35 points against the #3 team in the country Miami Dade during his sophomore campaign. Downs has signed a national letter of intent to attend Clayton University in Morrow, Georgia next season.

 

Five Volleyball Players Named All Conference

Released January 12, 2009

Palm Beach Community College landed 5 players on the All Southern Conference 1st and second teams. Named to the first team were Annie Kobeski, Yomaria Santana, and Alexandria Sinden while second team selections included Katherine Schilling and Anisa Lila. The Lady Panthers finished with an 18-9 overall record, second place in the southern Conference and were 1 step away from the National "Sweet 16".

Palm Beach Community College coach Alex Morales has announced that 6 of his current players have signed in the early signing period to attend 4 year Universities for the 2010 season. The following is a list of those signees:

PBCC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER SIGNS DIVISION 1

RELEASED NOVEMBER 19

Jamarra Robinson, a guard for the PBCC Women's basketball team has signed a national letter of intent to attend NCAA Division 1 program Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach for the 2009-2010 season. Jamarra is the first signee for the women's team in the early signing period. She is also the first signee for new coach Kris Ruffo and her staff. Jamarra is from Port St. Lucie, Florida.


DOWNS SIGNS WITH CLAYTON STATE: RELEASED NOVEMBER 14.

Tim Downs, leading scorer and assist man for the PBCC Panther Men's basketball team has signed a national letter of intent to attend Clayton State in Morrow, Georgia for the 2009-2010 season. Downs, the flamboyant point guard of the Panthers will play for a team that finished in the "elite 8" of the NCAA II Division National tournament and is one of the power teams in the Peach Belt Conference.


 

SOFTBALL TEAM CLEANS UP THE BEACH: RELEASED OCTOBER 6, 2008

The PBCC softball team participated in the 23rd annual International Coastal Cleanup Saturday September 20th. This year's team traveled to Boca Raton and the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. Walking along the Intracoastal Waterway, the members collected several pounds of trash as well as numerous amounts of plastic items for recycling.

PANTHERS PROVIDE COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITY: RELEASED OCTOBER 6, 2008

Youth Fest Youth Fest 2008 was held September 20 in Elisabeth Erling Gymnasium on the Lake Worth campus of Palm Beach Community College. A day devoted to our Palm Beach County Youth in providing them with activities to improve their self confidence, positive attitude, imagination, relaxation, initiative and teamwork.

The Palm Beach Community College men's and women's basketball teams and their coaches were in full force along with athletic administrative assistant Connie Smith to assist in the days activities. Over 200 of the Palm Beach County Youth were impacted! Job well done!
