MSI Frequently Asked Questions

Information students should consider before applying to the MSI.

What are the dates of the MSI?
The dates for the 2010 session are June 8 through August 3.

Where are the MSI classes held?
The new BioScience Technology Complex at Palm Beach Community College in Palm Beach Gardens is the learning laboratory for the MSI classes.

Who should apply?
The Math Science Summer Institute is designed for honors-level high school and college students. The courses offered are fast paced college-level honors credit classes. Students should have a strong math and science background.

Is attendance mandatory for all classes?
Because of the academic rigor of Institute classes, students are expected to attend all classes and Institute functions. Students who expect to miss classes due to other pre-scheduled summer activities should reconsider their application to the Math Science Summer Institute.

Can I miss a class?
If the need to miss a class arises, students should contact the professor, prior to the absence, to arrange make-up labs, tests, etc. Don’t enroll in the Institute if you plan to miss more than one class.

What are the program prerequisites?

• Trigonometry - MAC1105 College Algebra

Are the "value-added" activities during regular class time?
The value-added activities require time outside of class time, i.e. lecturers, field trips, and library research. Environmental Science and Physics Track students will have one overnight field trip. Some field trips may occur on Fridays and/or Saturdays.

Is there tutoring available and how much does it cost?
Because of the academic rigor, special tutors and mentors are hired exclusively for the MSI students. There is no cost for the students.

How much focus is on math?
Each track within the MSI requires a math course (visit the link for each track to see specific math courses).

How much does the Institute cost?
All cost of tuition, fees, books, lab coats and goggles are covered by the Institute. Transportation to and from the campus and local (in-county) field trip transportation are the responsibility of the student.
