Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I don't have my child's PIN number from last year. How do I get it?
A: Contact the Student Help Desk by phone at (561) 868-4000, by email at studenthelpdesk@pbcc.edu, or just click on the blue "live help" button.

Q: Can I register my child for just one class?
A: Yes, you can register for just one class. The cost of that class would be $59.00. The class would meet 2 hours a week for 6 weeks.

Q: I want to come to your campus and register. Where is the Palm Beach Gardens Campus located and what are the hours?
A: The campus is located on PGA Blvd. just west of Prosperity Farms Road. It is across the street from the Palm Beach Gardens Mall. When you turn into the campus, take the second left. Go to the building marked Registration/Admissions to register your child. The summer hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am - 7:00 pm.

Q: What is the deadline for registration?
A:
The registration deadline is June 18, 2009. However, you are encouraged to register early since classes are limited to 15 students and fill quickly.

Q: When do I have to pay for my child's classes?
A: The date will be printed on your child's schedule when you register. If you do not pay by the deadline, your child will be dropped from the classes, and there is no guarantee that your child will be able to get back in the same classes.

Q: Do you have Wind-Up and Wind-Down?
A:
The 2009 PBG SYC will only offer Wind-Down (4:00 - 5:30). The SYC programs in Lake Worth and Boca Raton offer both programs.

Q: How is lunch handled?
A:
A packed lunch must be brought by your child. All children will be supervised by Summer Youth College personnel.

Q: We are going on vacation and my child will miss a class. Is that ok?
A:
Although we would love your child to not miss any classroom instruction, it is OK to miss a class. Please let the instructor know that your child will be absent.

Q: My child is 8 years old. Can I still register my child for your program?
A:
If your child turns 9 between the dates of the program which is June 22 - July 30, 2009, he/she will be able to attend.

Q: My child is 13 years old. Could I still register my child for your program?
A:
The Palm Beach Gardens campus accepts children between the ages of 9-12 only. Please contact our Lake Worth or Boca Raton campuses for your 13 year old child. Their age range is 8 - 14.

Q: The class says it's only for 11-12 year olds, but my child is 10 and he/she really wants to take the class. Can you please enroll him/her?
A:
If your child turns 11 between the dates of June 22 - July 30, 2009, he/she will be permitted to register for the class.

Q: My child wants to take a math class, but I don't know which class is appropriate.
A:
The math classes are designed to help students who are struggling in math. The first half-hour of each class will be spen on multiplication tables on the computer. The remainder of the lesson will be done in the classroom with a multitude of hands-on activities. If your child has just completed 4th, 5th, or 6th grade and was struggling in math, register your child in the same math class that they just completed. The SYC math class will serve as a review and will prepare your child for the upcoming school year.

Q: My child needs help in reading. What class should I register him/her for?
A:
We do not offer any classes to assist specific reading needs. Please look on the Palm Beach County School District website at www.palmbeach.k12.fl.us, or the Palm Beach County Library website at www.pbclibrary.org.

Q: How do I know if any classes are full?
A:
Go to www.pbcc.edu. Click on "Search for classes" under Quick Links. Select class type at "non-credit" and campus as "Palm Beach Gardens Campus". Then click the "Search Now" button. Classes that are available will be listed. Summer Youth College classes will have a Course ID number beginning with AVO or YCO, so you may have to scroll through the pages. If the class you are looking for is not on the list, then it is full. Class status may change from day to day depending on schedule changes and payment deadlines, so check the web frequently.

Q: Do you offer any scholarships?
A:
No, the PBG campus does not currently offer scholarships. Please check with our Lake Worth or Boca Raton campuses.

Q: Where can I get a copy of your catalog?
A:
You can check the local libraries as well as our Palm Beach Gardens campus administration building for copies of the SYC catalog, or view the catalog online at www.pbcc.edu/SYC.xml.
