This lecture with lab course provides an overview of biotechnology concepts in both a historical and current context. Students are introduced to basic principles of genomics, proteomics, recombinant DNA technology, and molecular biology aspects of genetic engineering. The lab course allows students to gain hands-on experience in common biotechnology industry methods such as laboratory safety, aseptic techniques, measurements and calculations, and preparation of solutions. Students also obtain training in specific biotechnology techniques such as DNA extraction and amplification, polymerase chain reaction, and protein isolation and identification.
